Most common hardware components of a Security Camera System

Internet Connection
An internet connection is important for a security camera system to allow real-time monitoring of alerts & alarms, view real time & playback of footage. Common types of internet connections are:
1. NBN Fibre
2. NBN Wireless
3. Mobile Broadband (Using a simcard)
4. Starlink (Satelite)
In more mission critical applications, a fail-over or secondary internet connection is installed.

RJ45 Ethernet Patch Leads
Ethernet patch leads are available in various lengths, ranging from a compact 25cm to an extensive 100m. They also come in a variety of colors for easy identification. These cables are typically either CAT5 or the more advanced CAT6, which offers enhanced performance compared to its predecessor, CAT5. Patch leads are used to connect IP devices on the local area network. eg. Router / Modem to the NVR, IP Security cameras to the NVR etc.

CAT5 / CAT 6 Ethernet Data Cable 4 Pair
The solid core CAT5 / CAT6 cable is professionally installed in the walls & through the roof between the ethernet data wall plates. It is important that this cable is routed through the walls & ceilings in a way that avoids contact with the electrical cables that are also found in the roof and walls of modern houses. If this is unavoidable, the data cables are placed in conduit to create separation.

RJ45 Ethernet Wall Plate
An RJ45 wall plate is installed like a power point & serves as a conduit for CAT5 or CAT6 ethernet data cables within a building, facilitating connections between two points. Typically, the cable is routed up a wall, across the ceiling area, and then down through the wall cavity to a corresponding wall plate. This setup functions similarly to an extended ethernet patch lead, enabling the connection of devices such as IP Security Cameras to a Network Video Recorder (NVR).

Network Video Recorder (NVR)
Most commonly called an NVR, comes in many different brands and sizes. They are often installed close to the internet connection on either a shelf, wall mounted or in a data rack in a commercial installation. The IP cameras in most cases are cabled back to the POE (Power Over Ethernet) switch on the back on the NVR, alternatively. they are connected elsewhere on the clients local area network (LAN). The NVR stores the IP Security Camera video footage for retrieval at a later date if required.

Uninteruptible Power Supply (UPS)
An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is a critical component for ensuring the reliability of a security camera system. It acts as a backup power source, providing immediate electricity in case of a power outage. This continuity is vital for security systems, as it prevents cameras and recording equipment from shutting down, ensuring uninterrupted surveillance. Additionally, a UPS can protect the system from power surges and voltage spikes, which can damage sensitive electronic equipment. By maintaining a stable power supply, a UPS ensures that security systems remain operational and effective at all times, providing peace of mind and enhanced protection for the premises.
